ABOUT
Italian bassist and composer Ilaria Capalbo is equally at ease building hard-swinging lines and wreaking havoc on the whole sound-spectrum of her instruments. Her approach to playing has been described as “bold, visionary, architectonic” and her writing “lush”. Double bass, electric bass and electronics all add up to her sound palette.
Ilaria Capalbo is making an impression on the international jazz scene and mesmerizing audiences across Europe. Her last album, Karthago, was released to rave reviews. Aside from her band, she steadily collaborates with musicians coming from the world of classical music, pop and jazz. In every combination, her sound and expressive musicality is immediately recognizable.
Ilaria is also an emotionally attuned composer with a special gift for storytelling. Her inspiration often comes from a reflection on personal life and human nature. Her music takes the listener along a journey and often connects to the audience on a deeply emotional level. Ilaria’s composition resume extends to dance and film and to many different constellations, from duo to large ensemble.
She is also a sound artist working with installation and performance.
In 2022, Ilaria released her debut album as a bandleader, Karthago, exploring the theme of loss and reconstruction. The same band will record a second album in November 2024 with plans to release it in 2025.
